Artist Vs. Contributor
What makes someone an artist as opposed to a contributor?
The simple answer is that artists will be a member of a union such as Equity or the Musicians Union and as such, they will receive a union contract in-line with their unions requirements. A contributor on the other hand will not receive a contract and may only have to sign a release form.
Contributors can be paid
Just because someone is being paid to appear in or work on a programme does not make them an artist. Contributors can be paid but the terms and conditions are likely to be very different to those of an artist.
Directors
If you know the National Insurance number of the Director, they can be added as an Artist. If you don't, they can be added as a Contributor.
What to do if you're not sure
If you're just not sure whether someone is an artist or a contributor you should seek the advice of your in-house team.
